"I had no idea of the support I would receive and can't thank you enough for being a friendly ear on the phone."

Kate's story

Kate*, a new mum in her early 40s, contacted LionHeart when she was still on maternity leave from her surveying job after she found out her role was at risk of redundancy.

Her LionHeart support officer discussed her legal rights around maternity leave and also offered a referral for legal advice to help Kate put something in writing to her employer.

Kate also disclosed that her husband was suffering from work-related stress and anxiety and had cut his hours down. She was worried about him and her own position at work, and also worried about the family's financial security as a result.

As well as legal advice, Kate received several keeping-in-touch calls from her support officer, and her husband also began counselling through LionHeart.

Now back in the workplace, she said: "LionHeart was able to confirm the legal rights I had to return to my role following maternity leave and listened to my concerns about my husband and our finances.

"It really made me feel there was someone on my side. Ben (LionHeart support officer) provided advice and guidance which kept me sane. He also helped my husband access counselling, which he is finding extremely helpful.

"I've always been aware of LionHeart but hadn't thought to call prior to the risk of redundancy. Somehow, I always thought it was for folks worse off than me. I had no idea of the support I would receive and can't thank you enough for being a friendly ear on the phone."
